The Best Laid Plans ...

Well, we've been reading and plotting quite a bit thus far with not as much to show as the time invested might seem to warrant. We have made a few specific reservations, though, and this post will show you what we know we will be up to.

We leave Toronto mid afternoon on Sunday in early February. With a single stopover in L.A. we should arrive in Auckland early in the morning on Tuesday (keep in mind we cross the International Date Line so we move ahead a day).

We have booked a one bedroom apartment downtown Auckland on the water for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. The apartments are on a wharf on the harbourfront. In the picture on the left, the apartments are the "riverboat" looking buildings in the lower left opposite the sailboat.

Here is a shot of the apartment view from the balcony.

We leave Auckland on Friday for parts unknown. We are planning on heading over to the east coast about halfway down the North Island where we intend to rent a beachfront cottage for a week. We have looked online at a couple of hundred cottages and have a few that we think we might like, but we haven't yet booked anything.

The mid-island location is important, though, as it is central to many of the "attractions" we would like to visit which I will elaborate on some other day.

We will leave the cottage rental on Friday and drive down to the ferry that will take us over to the South Island. We intend to spend Friday night in Nelson.

Saturday we begin the sailboat portion of our trip. We have chartered a 28 foot keelboat from a rental agency located in Queen Charlotte Sound at the north end of the South Island. Here are a couple of pictures of the sailboat.

At the end of the sailing week, we intend to head further south on the South Island down to the more rugged Fiordland area. There are a few things we would like to do there including possibly hiking on one of the glaciers or a boat trip through some of the fiords or perhaps the transalpine train trip across the mountains.

As you can tell, the final six days of the trip are in flux at this point. We intend to plot that part out after we have arrived and have gained further insights from the locals as to what is the best use of the time available.

Well, that's the tour so far. Later!

Don

  • Looks like a very nice vacation.
However, we are wondering who will be looking after our Pension while you and Don are away?
